DoT confirms 162 responses to RFI for private freight rail and port projects
The Department of Transport (DoT) reports that it received 162 formal responses to a request for information (RFI) launched by Minister Barbara Creecy in March to test the market appetite for private sector participation (PSP) projects on the country’s rail corridors and across its port system.
Submissions for the RFI officially closed on May 30.
The DoT confirmed in a statement that 51 responses were received relating to the iron-ore and manganese corridor, 48 for the coal and chrome corridor, while 63 responses were received in relation to the container and automotive intermodal corridor.
The department’s online RFI portal recorded 11 600 visits between March 24 and May 9, which the DoT said reflected the “huge amount of interest” in the initiative, and also led to the extension of the submission deadline to May 30.
An assessment of the responses was under way and the DoT reiterated that the information would be treated with strict confidentiality and would be used exclusively to inform the development of potential PSP projects.
“The department intends to make further announcements in due course regarding the commencement of any procurement programme in respect of the PSP projects.”
No firm date was given for the possible issuance of commercial requests for proposals across the corridors, but Creecy has indicated previously that tenders could be released during the second half of 2025.
The DoT also confirmed that a second batch of RFIs would be released in July focusing on possible passenger rail PSP initiatives.
